Still pissed we didn't get him when you guys did but hanging on to the pick and selecting Pulock kind of tempers the loss. With that said I REAALLLLY wanted Schneider.

He will be a top-5 goalie for the next 5+ years.

Getting Horvat with that pick helps the sting of losing Schneider, a bit, but Gillis absolutely bungled the goalie situation in Vancouver, and The Devils were in the right place at the right time to cash in.

I wonder who will be the next eastern team to acquire Vancouver's best goalie for an underwhelming return... it's an annual tradition here.

using graphs without explanation or reference for them seems to be a tradition on hockeybuzz...

Gillis was a fool that last couple of seasons. he should have traded Schneider for Tampa's first and players when they went hard after him a couple seasons earlier after the 2011 cup run...

Getting players back then and improving the team would have helped against LA in 2012 when the window was still open. Either that or he should have traded Luongo right after the 2011 cup run. one or the other right then and there...

wouldn't have had to alienate Luongo or have him ask for a trade out of town.

Schneider should have been traded after the 2012 season as he'd already proven himself to be an outstanding goaltender. Once again poor management in Vancouver held on too long and didn't get the return he could have. Not unhappy with Bo Horvat, but they could've got more IMO.

I understand it. But there are no other goaltenders shown for reference. What constitutes a replacement goaltender? How about number of appearances per season to determine how much he actually contributed toward those GAR numbers per game?

How do those numbers compare to the other elite goalies like Price, Lundqvist, etc? How much better are his numbers than scrub goalies?

Corey Schneider is a great goalie on a bad team. Granted he will stabilize the Devils performances for years to come. But until there is a solid team - much less a defence in front of him he is longing for the days where he backed up Roberto Loungo.

As for as the armchair experts - I am sure their burgeoning career as a GM in the NHL has only been put on hold by the time they spend here criticizing real life GMs. Give your collective heads a shake... before Schneider there WAS Luongo ... the drafted player Corey Schneider almost quit the game while he was still young in the AHL as he struggled to adapt the professional level. Goalies take time to develop. Just as WILL Thatcher Demko... When Corey came through it was a perfect storm of having two no. 1 goalies and no buyers.

Lest it be forgotten - it wasn't Mike Gillis that created the debacle of the long and costly Roberto Luongo contract. Nor was it Gillis that decided to fly to Florida during the moments of the NHL draft to tell Roberto the good news that he was again the number one goalie in Van City. Here lies the rub with idiots calling out MG ... This was ALL at the feet and direct meddling of Francisco Aquilinni and family ... The Owners!

Think again... the Canucks have a future number one centre and captain ... and by the time the Devils have a good team Corey Schneider will be on another team through Free Agency or retired.

At the time, I wanted the Canucks to flip Luongo but instead they signed him to that god awful contract. As has been said, Horvat is the definitely the silver lining. I have a feeling he might be a special player...

Unfortunately for CS, he is wasting his most productive years being #1 goalie for one of the worst teams in the league.

But then again, $6M per year buys a lot of early retirement perks, so I guess it isn't a waste afterall. Several low stress, high pay years, park the funds and enjoy the remaining 50 odd years of your life without financial restraint - not a bad deal. So what if CS nevers gets a SC.

What the hell are you talking about?
Not only did Schneider never struggle at the AHL level, but there was never anything about him potentially quitting.

He put up 3 very impressive seasons in the AHL in both the regular and post season.

07-08 he had 21 W 12 L SV% .916 in 36 games
Playoffs he was a .938 in 5 games
08-09 28 W 10 L .928 in 40 games
Playoffs .922 in 22 games
09-10 .919 35 win 23 L in 60 games
Playoffs .905 in 6 games

Listen before the owners messed up MG had the opportunity to follow the plan he outlined and trade Schneider. He always said the plan was to develop schneider and trade him for a higher pick. he had a good plan and didnt' stick to it.

if he was gonna trade someone he had the chance to trade either one in teh summer of 2011 which he didnt' do or by the trade deadline of 2012 before the playoffs. those were the times to do it. not after AV had played schneider for two games against LA when it caused the controvesy about who is number 1 and luongo said his teim was up and he's ready to move on...

Devils need to trade schneider. He will win too many games and keep them as the 5-6 worst team in the nhl. If they can flip him for a top 10 draft pick in next years draft I'd do it a heartbeat.

He might be worth more than a top 10 pick with his reasonable salary. Probably have to go package deal though to a contender and try get roughly the Kessel trade - 2 1st round picks (Kap essentially a 1st) + 1 to 2 prospects.
